The already tragic death of Reeva Steenkamp and murder trial of Olympian and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has produced an ugly side story.

Theepochtimes.com is reporting that scammers are using social media to try to solicit donations for the defense of the South African sprinter.
According to the website, several fake Facebook pages are attempting to steal money from people by claiming that the money donated will go to defend Pistorius, who has been on trial since March for shooting his girlfriend Steenkamp through a bathroom wall on Feb. 14, 2013.
One of the fake Facebook pages posts a photo of Pistorius' older brother Carl and says "We seek financial support for the trial, debts and pending projects we have at hand. If you are interested in working actively with us in this direction, please do contact: Mrs Victoria Anderson at vicandersonl@hotmail.com."

The page's latest post says: "Thank You all for the continued support and words of encouragement during this difficult time. Pray for Oscar."
Theepochtimes.com added that Pistorius' family has reiterated publicly that anyone soliciting money on Oscar's behalf or the family's behalf are committing fraud.
"We will, once again request Facebook to shut this profile down," said Anneliese Burgess, a spokeswoman for Pistorius, to the Star newspaper, as reported by theepochtimes.com. "All the legitimate Pistorius family members' Facebook pages are either deactivated or set on full privacy settings."
Pistorius' trial has been on hiatus since May 26 when he entered a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he has general anxiety disorder, as a doctor testifying for the defense claimed during his trial. He is entering his fourth week of evaluation at the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.
A doctor not associated with the trial has say that Weskoppies examiners already should know whether Pistorius has general anxiety disorder, the defense doctor testified could have given him a legitimate fear for his life when he shot Steenkamp.
The trial is expected to resume June 30, according to Bustle.com.
