Cahill received the yellow card diving into the legs of a Dutch player and forcing him to be removed from the match via stretcher. He remains eligible to keep playing in this matchup however, which remains tied at 1-1.
The news of the yellow card is devastating for the next match, but nothing can dampen his magnificent score which rivaled Robin Van Persie's goal for Holland in their opening matchup vs. Spain. Van Persie's goal sparked the Dutch to a drubbing of the favored Spanish side, and Australia's hoping Cahill's majestic strike could propel them to a similar result.
70 seconds after Robben struck first in the match, Cahill was on the receiving end of a high, looping pass from the right side of the pitch off the foot of Ryan McGowan. It arched over several players before Cahill fired a left-footed missile that streaked over the goalkeeper's arms and just under the crossbar for the tying goal.
In Australia's first matchup, a 3-1 loss to Chile, Cahill excelled as their primary offensive threat. He found the back of the net in that matchup as well, and attempted five of the Aussies' 13 total shots.
The Aussies are fighting for their World Cup lives today, and will enter Monday's match with Spain heavy underdogs. A shocked vs. the Netherlands today would be one of the major storylines of this tournament.
