Floyd Mayweather Jr Next Fight: Keith Thurman A Dark Horse For September 'Money' Matchup? [VIDEO]

Floyd Mayweather is set to fight on September 13, but there is still no opponent or venue set for that date. Part of the reason could be the shaking out process following the Richard Schaefer-Golden Boy break up; it is unclear which fighters are attached to Schaefer and which belong to Golden Boy, and Floyd has staked his loyalties to the former.

Amir Khan believes "one day" he'll get to fight Mayweather

His last fight against Marcos Maidana was an entertaining one, but the outcome never truly seemed in doubt. Mayweather was far more accurate than Maidana, and most feel as if that was probably the best effort Maidana is capable of putting forth. Even if a rematch was more of the same, it'd be little more than an entertaining bout with zero suspense.

Amir Khan has long pined for a shot at "Money" Mayweather, but the September date means he's out. As a Muslim he will not be able to train because of the fasting required during Ramadan. Manny Pacquiao is also out, although the speculative reasons vary there. Mayweather claims it is a personal vendetta against Top Rank CEO that has killed that bout, while Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach believes Floyd won't risk his undefeated record.

Bob Arum says Cotto would defeat Floyd in rematch

"Floyd's main concern has become keeping that 0 (for zero losses) on his record. I don't see him taking any real risk of losing that before the end of next year, when he says he's retiring," Roach said. "It's not that he's afraid of Manny. No fighters are scared of anybody in the world. It's just that he believes if he goes out undefeated he will be seen as better than greats like Sugar Ray Robinson, who had losses on their records."

One fighter who is currently unburdened by a locked up date is a burgeoning boogeyman at welterweight, Keith "One-Time" Thurman. He hasn't had truly major victory on his resume, but has cleaned out his last three opponents, all quality veterans (Julio Diaz, Jesus Soto Karass, Diego Chaves). He is the WBA's interim champion, and hopes to eventually become Mayweather's mandatory challenger. Back in May he said as much.

"The one way I see Floyd fighting me (is via the mandatory). "I'm a young, up-and-coming, rising star. I have yet to fight any world champion. A lot of them claim they have many reasons not to fight me. And it would be nice to give Floyd a reason to fight me. So we'll see what happens."
