The Miami Heat received some bittersweet news Saturday as both Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem have opted out of their contracts. Sources believe the three players are going to attempt to take pay cuts in order for the team to keep LeBron James.
Heat president Pat Riley released a statement concerning the trio just in case this is the last time we have seen them in Miami.
"Dwyane has been the cornerstone of our organization for over a decade, and we hope he remains a part of the HEAT family for life," Riley said in a statement. "Udonis has been the heartbeat of this team for 11 years. He has sacrificed countless times to make this organization successful, and he is the epitome of what this organization stands for. We look forward to meeting with Dwyane and Udonis and their agent in the coming days to discuss our future together.”
The trio have expressed interest in staying with the Heat, but this could all depend on what James ultimately decides to do. James is eligible to sign a five-year, $130 million extension with the Heat and has made it clear he wants the team to work on improving the roster or he would pursue free agency.
The NBA free agency period begins July 1 as all four Heat players join a star studded cast that includes the likes of Carmelo Anthony and Kyle Lowry.
Bosh’s deal was good for two years and $43 million. Wade was due two years, $42.5 million on his contract. Haslem has a $4.6 million player option for the 2014-15 season. James will opt out of the final two years and $42.7 million on his contract.
