Tonight at 7:05 p.m. ET, the Tampa Bay Rays (35-49) and New York Yankees (41-39) take the field at Yankee Stadium for the opener of a three-game set live from New York. Tampa Bay continues an 11-game road trip after taking three of four from the Baltimore Orioles while New York closes out a six-game road trip after dropping two of three to the Boston Red Sox over the weekend. The Rays enter play with the worst record in the American League while the Yankees sit in third place in the AL East, two games behind the first place Toronto Blue Jays.
Chris Archer (4-5, 3.29 ERA) takes the ball for Tampa Bay while New York counters with David Phelps, who is 3-4 with a 4.35 ERA.
The Yankees are playing their fifth straight series against a division rival though they've lost three straight series and six of their last eight games.
"Right now, I always believe that when you play against teams that are in your division, those are series that you've got to win," said Yankees designated hitter Carlos Beltran, who is hitting just .220 with eight homers and 24 RBI this season, according to MLB.com.
Archer threw a two-hit shutout at Yankee Stadium last July 27 and will look to play off of that success.
"Since that point, I know what I'm capable of and I'm striving to do that every night out," Archer said via MLB.com. "That's the standard for me."
New York first baseman Mark Teixeira is hitting .243 and leads the team with 15 homers and 41 RBI.
Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria paces the team with 10 homers while first baseman James Loney leads the team in batting average (.280) and RBI (41).
