France 0-1 Germany
Goals: Germany—Hummels 13’
A mildly entertaining affair saw Germany defeat France 1-0 on Friday. A set-piece header from Mats Hummels opened the match in the 13th minute, forcing France out of its defensive shell. A potent German counter-attack saw a majority of the chances in the second half, but sharpness lagged in the final third. Les Blues were unable to convert chances of their own. With the victory, Germany advances to their fourth consecutive semifinal, becoming the first national team to ever do so.
Brazil 2-1 Colombia
Goals: Brazil—Silva 7’, Luiz 69’; James 80’ (penalty)
It took a chippy 90 minutes, but Brazil was able to move past Colombia 2-1 on Friday. A set-piece goal from captain Thiago Silva gave the host nation the early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. David Luiz would double the advantage in the second half, emphatically driving home a direct free-kick. Just over 10 minutes later, Colombia pulled one back. James Rodriguez buried a rewarded penalty in the dying minutes of the match, but it wouldn’t prove to be enough.
