Los Angeles finishes off a six-game road trip it is 3-2 on thus far while Detroit closes out a nine-game homestand that it is 5-3 on entering today. The Tigers erased a 5-0 deficit and defeated the Dodgers 14-5 in the opening game of the series Tuesday night.
Both teams enter play in first place in their respective divisions as Los Angeles leads the National League West while Detroit currently sits atop the American League Central.
Zach Greinke (11-4, 2.66 ERA) toes the rubber for the Dodgers while the Tigers counter with Max Scherzer, who is 10-3 with a 3.47 ERA.
Scherzer held the Dodgers to two runs in seven innings in a loss at Dodger Stadium on April 8, and now he faces a stacked lineup that will have an extra hitter in an American League park, but he isn't concerned.
"They're a good team, we're a good team," Scherzer, who is third in the AL with 139 strikeouts, said via MLB.com. "I don't care what set of rules we play by. We can play by any set of rules. It's going to be a good game."
Greinke is coming off of earning his 11th win against the Colorado Rockies in his last start while allowing two runs (one earned).
"All of my pitches were useable and I got ahead of the count with quality pitches," Greinke, who is fifth in the NL with 119 strikeouts, told MLB.com. "I got a lot of first-pitch outs, five or six, and a couple double plays. That was key."
Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez has a .254 batting average with a team-best 14 homers and is fourth in the NL with 58 RBI while second baseman Dee Gordon leads the league with 42 stolen bases and nine triples. Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig leads the team with a .305 batting average.
Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez is in the top-five in various AL categories including batting average (.328) and homers (21) but he has been out of the lineup since Friday due to soreness in his side. Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler is second in the league in runs scored (61), tied for second in doubles (25) and fifth in hits (109).
Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera leads the league with 32 doubles and is second in the AL with 70 RBI and 113 hits.
The Dodgers and Tigers close out their brief two-game interleague set when they take the field this afternoon at Comerica Park in Detroit.
