Adam Scott (-9) defeated Angel Cabrera in a two-hole playoff to win The Masters tournament championship at Augusta National on Sunday. Scott became the first Australian to win in the 79-year history of the tournament.
Both Scott and Cabrera finished the 18-hole final round with an even score of -9 par. Scott knocked in a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole and put the pressure on Cabrera entering his final shot. Cabrera answered with a birdie of his own to force the playoff.
Scott capitalized with a 1-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win the green jacket. The 32-year-old finally found his personal redemption for his own failure to close out the Open Championship last summer.
"We like to think we're the best at everything. Golf is a big sport at home, and this is the one thing in golf we hadn't been able to achieve," Scott told ESPN. "It's amazing that it's my destiny to be the first Australian to win. It's incredible."
