Peterson flew back to Minnesota early Saturday morning and has been deactivated for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots. According to reports, the charges stem from Peterson using a switch to discipline his four-year-old son. Sports Radio 610 in Houston reported that he removed the leaves of a tree branch to spank the child.

"This indictment follows Adrian's full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son," Peterson's attorney Rusty Hardin said in a statement on Friday. "He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened."

According to the report by the Houston station, the incident occurred in May in Spring, Texas. Peterson punished his son for pushing another one of his children and the boy suffered multiple cuts and bruises to areas including his back, legs and ankles.

According to ESPN.com, Peterson's uncle, Chris, said that Peterson will eventually release a statement through his attorney but it likely wouldn't come Saturday.
