Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao still appears to be a fight fans want to see, despite both fighters having come down from their peaks of several years ago. Coming off a unanimous decision victory over Marcos Maidana, Mayweather was asked about potentially facing Pacquiao in 2015.
His initial response generated some hope. "I'm going to talk to my team and if the Pacquiao fight presents itself, let's make it happen," the pound-for-pound champion said.
Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, also said that contrary to popular opinion Mayweather is willing to fight anyone -including Pacquiao. "Floyd is ready to fight anybody," Ellerbe said.
"Of course there is hope [of a Pacquiao fight next May]. It's all about giving the fans what they want to see. Hopefully we can get it together and make it happen."
Of course, there has been hope of a Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown many times before, only for it to be dashed for myriad reasons ranging from purse splits to Mayweather's acrimonious relationship with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.
While Mayweather didn't seem to oppose a Pacquiao fight in 2015 post-fight, he also showed no signs he would push for it.
"I don't really think about Pacquiao. I don't really know him. I wish him all the best but I couldn't care less about Manny Pacquiao. I am only focused on Floyd Mayweather. If it happens, it happens."
Talk of a Pacquiao fight is premature at this stage anyway, as Mayweather also pointed out, because Pacquiao has a bout vs. Chris Algieri scheduled for November 22 in China. While Algieri, the WBO junior welterweight champion, is considered a heavy underdog fights are not won on paper. Pacquiao has not won by knockout since 2009, and Algieri was a similarly big underdog against Ruslan Provodnikov this summer.
