WWE News and Rumors: Backstage Update On 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin Possibly Returning [VIDEO]

There have been a lot of rumors swirling around regarding "Stone Cold" Steve Austin possibly returning to the WWE for one more match amid speculation that he is training for a comeback and it appears he might take a bigger role in the company next year.

There has been speculation over the last couple of weeks that Austin could return for one more match at WrestleMania 31 on March, 29, 2015 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. or possibly WrestleMania 32 in 2016 and the rumors heightened after the WWE Hall of Famer said on a recent podcast he was training hard for a comeback.

According to PWInsider, there is talk of Austin having a greater role within the WWE next year, but there is no word on what the role would be and if it includes him having his first match since a bout at WrestleMania XIX with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in 2003.

Austin casually mentioned on his Steve Austin Show podcast that he was currently training for a return to the ring, but there have been no updates on that front. Fellow WWE Hall of Famer and Austin's good friend Jim Ross recently shared his two cents on the matter on his blog at Jrsbarbq.com.

"Talked with Steve Austin, whose podcasts on @PodcastOne are killing it, on Monday night and was kidding him about him 'training for a comeback,' which most fans thought meant Steve was returning to the ring, and, subsequently, 'taking a bigger role within WWE in 2015,'" Ross wrote. "I jokingly asked Austin that if he was going to be taking a bigger role if he could get a brother some work because a man's got to eat!"

Ross said that Austin was not at all alluding to a return to the squared circle for WrestleMania 31.

"Bottom line is that Steve was talking to a man who used to train with 'Arnold' back in the day at the Gold's Gym in Venice and Steve said he was training to prepare to return to Gold's Gym to train," he said. "They were talking about training, not wrestling, and how working out at Gold's in Venice wasn't for everyone. When the fans heard Austin say that he was "training for a comeback" they assumed that he meant to the ring which in turn means WrestleMania 31."

Ross did say that Austin is keeping an open mind, which provides some hope for a return.

"While Steve always keeps an open mind on returning to the ring for one last match, that's not an immediate goal of his or even on the back burner," he blogged. "If many factors involved in that process were in place, I could theoretically see Steve doing it but the chance that all the stars aligning to his satisfaction are slim plus the window of opportunity as it relates to Father Time is beginning to close as well."

Austin has given mixed signals about a return, telling radio host Sam Roberts during SummerSlam weekend in mid-August that he had "no hunger' to return to the WWE while hinting at a possible WrestleMania 32 match in an interview with PWTorch.

It remains to be seen what Austin will ultimately decide to do, but it appears as though there are mixed signals in regards to a return to the squared circle and it's very much up in the air.
