St. Louis Cardinals Rumors: Cards The Mystery Team Joining Red Sox, Cubs In Bidding War For Jon Lester?

The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and San Francisco Giants may have more competition than just each other for the services of Jon Lester, but there are no definite indications from which team. The Los Angeles Dodgers are believed to be trying to get in on the Lester bidding, but there also may be a mystery team getting involved.

Argument Led To Donaldson Trade?

According to media reports, an official with one of the clubs involved in the biddin indicates that a new team has entered the mix and that the identity of that team is unknown at this time. Speculation has already begun that the team could be the St. Louis Cardinals.

Both the Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves have been previously linked to Lester this offseason, but both clubs have also recently made statements that downplayed their interest in the free agent lefty.

Blue Jays Want Dexter Fowler?

The Red Sox, Cubs, and Giants are not so sure, however. Although they were widely believed to be the last three teams in the running, the front offices of those clubs have maintained the belief that there were other teams in the mix whose interest had not been publicly revealed.

With the reported interest of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the bidding over Lester may intensify further, even if the supposed mystery team never comes to light.

According to the three clubs actively bidding for Lester, the free agent wants to finish this process and choose a team as soon as he can. He had apparently hoped to have chosen a club by the start of the winter meetings, but as they draw nearer (they start next week), there are no clear indicators that Lester will sign soon.
