The Boston Red Sox have been plenty busy this offseason, and you can add another deal to the list of moves that they are still considering. The Red Sox signed arguably the two best free agent hitters in Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, and everyone knew they still had plenty of work to shore up their pitching staff.
Harper, Nationals Reach Agreement
They pursued former Boston pitcher Jon Lester, but when he signed with Chicago, the Red Sox wasted no time moving one, as they traded for Wade Miley and Rick Porcello and signed free agent Justin Masterson. The consensus around the league and in the media is that the team still has moves to make.
Many have speculated that Boston will try to pry Cole Hamels away from Philadelphia, but rumors have also started swirling that they may consider another NL East pitcher. According to media reports, the Washington Nationals have been shopping Jordan Zimmermann around, and Boston is one of the teams they have called.
Cole Hamels Hopes For Move To Winning Team
Zimmermann is one of the most promising young pitchers in the game, but he is set to be a free agent after the 2015 season. Zimmermann wants to sign an extension before opening day, but it is believed that he wants a deal in the ballpark of the $155 million deal that Jon Lester just received. Based on his age (28) and his ability, that kind of money is not out of the question.
The Nationals have discussed an extension with Zimmermann, but they are also dangling him to other teams to see what kind of return they can get for him. They may not feel like paying him that much money since they also have big-money deals for Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg on the horizon.
For their part, the Red Sox certainly have the prospects to make such a deal happen, and they absolutely need a front-of-the-rotation starter like Zimmermann. However, if an extension is not reached, Boston may not want to part with some of their prized prospects only to have their staff ace leave in free agency next offseason.
