Despite wide receiver Michael Crabtree undergoing surgery to repair a torn right Achilles tendon Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers have no interest in bringing back aging star Randy Moss, NFL.com reports.
San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh didn't even reference Moss when asked whether the 49ers were considering reconnecting with him after letting him go as a free agent after the 2012 season.
"We're excited for the young receivers that we have," NFL.com reported Harbaugh as saying when asked about a possibly contacting Moss. "Really feel that somebody's going to emerge there because they have to. And competition will create that. And we'll look forward to watching that."
Moss played in all 16 games for the 49 in 2012 with two starts. He caught 28 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns. His reception total matched his career low that he set in 2010 while playing with three different teams before he retired in 2011.
Moss has 982 receptions for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns over a 14-year career. He was the NFL Player of the Year in 2003, the NFL Rookie of the Year in 1998 and he set an NFL record for TD receptions in a single season 23 during the 2007 season with the New England Patriots.
According to NFL.com, the leading candidate to ascend to a major role is 2012 first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins, who has spent the offseason working out to add strength and trying to build an on-field relationship with quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
The report added that the 49ers are expecting a big year out of Jenkins, despite the fact that he could not overtake fellow wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr., and Kyle Williams on the depth chart in 2012.
Moss departed the 49ers on good terms, the report went on to say.
