Floyd Mayweather Jr. Next Fight: Manny Pacquiao Victory Would Make 'Money' Irrelevant? [VIDEO]

While heads were turned by recent comments by Showtime announcer and former welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi with regards to Manny Pacquiao’s rumored steroid use, HBO analyst Roy Jones Jr. made some comments about Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Jones Jr., once considered the boxer in the world pound-for-pound during a long reign in the light heavyweight division, said that a Mayweather-Pacquiao super fight could actually damage Mayweather by making him “irrelevant.”

Beating Pacquiao, Jones Jr. said, would remove any interest in future fights.

“He’s so boring that if he beats Pacquiao he’s irrelevant then. Because if he beats Manny Pacquiao who else do we want to see Floyd Mayweather fight? Or dance with, I should say? He danced with Maidana for 24 rounds. The most exciting thing that happened was Maidana bit him and he didn’t even draw blood. And he’s screaming. At least Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear off. At least he had to go to surgery. He [Maidana] didn’t even draw blood,” Jones Jr. said.

If Mayweather Jr. chooses not to face Pacquiao, or if negotiations break down again like they have in the past, the only viable option seems to be fighting Amir Khan. While Khan’s record is far from spotless, he has the biggest name among remaining possible opponents, and a growing chorus of boxing observers believe he has a chance to hand Mayweather his first loss.

Khan himself has proclaimed to have the solution to Mayweather’s vaunted defense—hand speed. Mayweather’s made his money facing large, fearsome punchers, and made them look hapless due to his cat-quick reflexes.

Khan doesn’t have the power of a Marcos Maidana, but he is a pure boxer with faster hands. Malignaggi, who is confident Mayweather would “destroy” Pacquiao if the met, picked Khan to take out the pound-for-pound king.
