Canelo Alvarez is digging in his heels when it comes to fighting on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo in 2015, and he doesn't appear to care if that means competing against a Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao super fight.
"It is a very important date for me and I will not move it. I'm retaking the Mexican dates because they are very important to us and we are appointed to it to fight in May and September," Alvarez said while calling for support from Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya.
"It's very important to have the support of Oscar De La Hoya," Alvarez said. If Pacquiao and Mayweather do agree to fight on May 2, however, it's unclear if De La Hoya will be 100 percent behind his fighter. That super fight has been one boxing fans have clamored for since the mid-2000s, and De La Hoya himself said he'd attempt to talk Canelo down if it happens.
"Obviously if Mayweather-Pacquiao happens it would be my obligation to go and talk to Canelo and maybe, kind of convince him to move out of that date," De La Hoya said ahead of Amir Khan's bout with Devon Alexander. "But this kid is determined, and he wants to fight Cinco De Mayo."
While Canelo is determined to fight on that date, Cotto's camp hasn't said much on the matter. Cotto may not be a bigger draw than Alvarez anymore, but he is an upper-tier star in boxing still and may decide he doesn't want to go up against Mayweather-Pacquiao. According to Alvarez, if Cotto backed out they'd be able to move forward.
"I'm ready to face Cotto, but he's not the only option," Alvarez said. Fellow Mexican star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been linked in the past to Canelo.
