Arizona Cardinals Rumors: Larry Fitzgerald Leaving Franchise?

Larry Fitzgerald has been a subject of much debate in recent season due to the quarterback issues that have plagued the Arizona Cardinals for what feels like forever. Since the retirement of Kurt Warner, the team has employed many different starters under center, and nearly all of them have performed poorly.

The poor quarterback play seemed like it had ended when the team got Carson Palmer, but even he suffered a season-ending knee injury this year, putting them right back in the below-average quarterback boat. Many have felt sorry for Fitzgerald, who was once unquestionably the best receiver in the league.

It seemed that Fitzgerald's prime years were being wasted by the team's inability to find competent quarterback play, and those assertions may have been proven true this year, as the former Pro Bowler did not play all that well even when Palmer was at the helm.

New Year's Resolutions For 5 Athletes

Now, according to Fox Sports, Fitzgerald does not believe that his contract situation can be worked out in such a way that he will be able to play for the team next season. Fitzgerald is among the highest-paid wideouts in football, and he already re-worked his deal once so that the team could free up more cap room.

Fitzgerald is apparently unwilling to do it again, and he is due an $8 million roster bonus in March. General manager Steve Keim has put the ball in Fitzgerald's court to make it seem like the wide receiver is the one being obstinate if an agreement cannot be reached that will see him receive less money.

If things continue along these lines, it would seem that the two sides would elect to part ways. The team has stated previously that they will not release Fitzgerald, but they may try to trade him before his roster bonus is due. Contending teams in need of receiver help may be willing to part with a mid-round draft pick in order to acquire such a proven weapon.
