Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing Teaming Up In Charlotte?

Once fierce rivals, Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing are close to teaming up in Charlotte, where Ewing is thought to be a top finalist for one of new coach Steve Clifford’s top assistant posts.

Owner Jordan and the Bobcats announced this week they has tabbed Clifford as the team’s new coach, signing him to a two-year deal with a team option for a third season that Yahoo! Sports reports could be worth upwards of $6 million.

Ewing and Clifford once worked together as assistants in Orlando and have long remained close. Ditto for the former the Knicks star and Jordan, who off the court were among the league’s best friends.

Clifford replaces Mike Dunlap, who was fired after just one season during which the Bobcats finished 21-61. He was also thought to be a finalist for the head job in Milwaukee, with Charlotte actually making a pre-emptive move by offering him the job prior to a to second interview scheduled with the Bucks.

Clifford has been an assistant in New York, Houston, Orlando and Los Angeles. He also had four 20-win seasons as a Division II head coach at Adelphi in New York. Stan and Jeff Van Gundy, both of whom he’s coached under, have long touted him as a strong candidate in the mold of Chicago Bulls coach, and fellow former assistant, Tom Thibodeau.
