Aaron Hernandez Double Murder Update: Lawyers Willing To Go To Jail To Protect Evidence?

Aaron Hernandez, a former star tight end for the New England Patriots accused of three murders, has a defense team that goes above and beyond for their clients. According to reports, his team was willing to be incarcerated to protect Hernandez's interests.

The Boston Herald has reported that a cell phone prosecutors wanted the defense to turn over as evidence was worth his lawyers subjecting themselves to imprisonment for contempt.

Prosecutors argued that the phone contained "evidence of a crime under investigation by the grand jury," but the defense refused, and won over the court. According to the Herald Hernandez had given the phone over to his lawyers for "legal advice," which means it is protected under attorney-client privilege.

Initially a Suffolk Superior Court Judge ruled in favor of the prosecutors and approved a grand jury subpoena that would have forced them to submit the cell phone, but the defense appealed to the state Appeals Court, which then kicked the matter to the Supreme Judicial Court.

This case is separate from the one Hernandez is currently dealing with. Jury selection for the murder of Odin Lloyd, which happened in 2013, is underway. While in custody for the Lloyd murder, Hernandez was charged with the double-slaying of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu in 2012 after an argument in a Boston nightclub.

There is speculation that Lloyd's knowledge of Hernandez's actions the night of the double homicide was a factor in his own execution-style death.

There have also been reports that Hernandez's fiancée Shayanna Jenkins, whom is suspected of getting rid of the murder weapon which has never been found, is being offered immunity to testify against the former football star.

Lloyd was dating Jenkins' sister.
