Colin Kaepernick Update: 49ers Hire Defensive Line Coach Jim Tomsula, Ignore Offensive Woes? [VIDEO]

Perhaps, Colin Kaepernick knew what was coming when he enlisted the help of Kurt Warner and Dennis Gile to help him with his pocket passing for 2015.

Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that the San Francisco 49ers have promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to replace Jim Harbaugh as head coach. That news comes as a minor surprise, considering that Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase had a second interview with the team and seemed a natural fit to mentor Kaepernick, who labored through 2014.

Earlier in the day, several media outlets had linked Gase's name with the 49ers job.

The Sporting News speculated that 49ers management - owner Jed York and general manager Trent Baalke - realizes it has the personnel in place to continue to be a Super Bowl contender and meshing with an assistant coach on the Niners staff would be the most sensible move or the organization.

Kurt Warner says the goal is not to "fix" Colin Kaepernick

How Tomsula's hiring affects Kaepernick remains to be seen.

The San Jose Mercury News speculated that 49ers management had to decide whether to stay on a defensive-minded track or focus on offense and bringing assistance to their talented-but-struggling quarterback with the hiring of its new head coach.

"Generally, the 49ers might have decided that they can't 100% satisfy both areas with this coaching hire; it's hard to satisfy both areas," the Mercury News' Tim Kawakami wrote. "... So I think the 49ers' choice will come down to HELP KAEPERNICK or FOCUS ON THE DEFENSE, and then hope that the other area gets taken care of along the way, secondarily."

Kaepernick is in Arizona, learning the art of pocket-passing from Gile and - on a part-time basis - Warner, who will spend a couple of days a week breaking down game film and going over X's and O's with Kaepernick, who had his lowest passer rating (86.4 in 2014) in his three years as a starting quarterback.

Kaepernick is expected to spend 11 weeks training in Arizona before reporting to the 49ers offseason camp, which starts in early May. Teams with new coaches get two extra weeks of offseason work.
