Derek Jeter Rumors:How Will the Yankees Fill The Captain's Leadership Void? [VIDEO]

The New York Yankees are in a bit of a transitional period as a franchise. The longtime face of the franchise, Derek Jeter, has retired, and the team will have to fill the void he left behind both on the field and in the locker room.

Failure To Sign Moncada A Symbol Of Yankees Crumbling?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Yankees manager Joe Girardi does not think that just one man can fill Jeter's shoes as captain, so he cautions fans not to expect the team to name a new one. Jeter was the first captain that the Yankees had designated in nearly a decade when he was given the honor in 2003.

"Will we have one go-to guy?" Girardi wondered aloud, "I don't think so. I think it'll come from all over." Girardi indicated that he will rely on veterans to lead their areas of the team since there is no franchise stalwart that can easily command the respect of the entire roster.

"I think that there are fractions of that where other guys might lead this group-Derek wasn't sitting in the bullpen, you know? That was David Robertson's job. And I think you'll have guys step up in different areas," Girardi said.

The Yankees certainly do not lack for aging clubhouse presences, as they have one of the oldest rosters in the league, and they appear to be solidly on the outside of the playoff picture as the season draws near.

No matter what kind of leadership the team gets in the wake of Jeter's departure, they will need an influx of new blood before they can hope to return to glory.
