The Dallas Cowboys surprised nearly everyone with their on-field success in 2014, riding a dominant rushing attack to a 12-4 record, an NFC East title, and a first-round playoff victory (and very nearly a second one, but you probably heard a little something about that).

Now that free agency is upon us, Dallas will look to re-sign some key players or fill the roster holes when they leave. The team franchise tagged Dez Bryant, but they may let DeMarco Murray and some other important players walk away. One thing is for sure (if you believe Jerry Jones): the team will not overpay for any new players.

Perhaps Jones found a book about salary cap management and has been studying. Perhaps he read some articles about how many more big free agent contracts turn into disasters than success stories. Regardless, if he did not overpay for anyone this offseason, that would be in stark contrast to some of his past moves as Dallas GM.

Do not forget, this is the same Jerry Jones that once traded three draft picks (including a first-rounder!) for the right to give Roy Williams millions of dollars to be mediocre for a few seasons. It's the same Jones that gave oft-injured linebacker Sean Lee a six-year, $42 million deal because he stayed mostly healthy for one season. He gave Brandon Carr $50 million over five years. The list goes on.
The point is, Jones has not been shy about spending big bucks on players at any point, but he has made some questionable-at-best decisions about who he spends that money on. Some players, like star left tackle Tyron Smith, look like smart signings at nearly any price. But Dallas has spent far too much money on questionable deals over the years, and fans of the team should adopt a "believe it when they see it" attitude about Jones's new outlook on free agency.
