PGA Tour Leaderboard: Shell Houston Open Round 1 Recap, Scott Piercy Takes Lead

The first day of the 2015 Shell Houston Open came to a close on Thursday, with Scott Piercy taking a two-stroke lead.

J.B. Holmes and Alex Cejka finished two strokes behind. Phil Mickelson and Charles Howell III round out the top five. Below is recap of the first day's events (via PGA Tour).

What They're Saying

Scott Piercy: "In my 13th hour, something kind of clicked and I figured it out. On Wednesday, I kind of ingrained it, kept working on it and today was awesome. It really was."

Phil Mickelson: "My short game actually was what threw away so many shots [last week]. I spent the last three days working on that, so I was able to turn that around in a few days and the game feels pretty good. This is a big week for me. I felt the game was close last week. The only thing missing was chipping and short game. If I can play well this week or continue on playing for the next three days, it should be some good momentum for next week."

Charles Howell III: "Well, obviously growing up there, yes, it's the one tournament [The Masters] I want to be in more than any. It's a big deal. But with that said, it's a big deal for everybody. Currently I'm not even qualified for the drive, chip and putt. I've got some work ahead of me."

Stats of the Day

Scott Piercy finished with nine total birdies, while J.B. Holmes finished with the most putts per round (24).
