Albert Pujols Threatens Suit, Jack Clark Fired After Making Steroids Accusations Against Former St. Louis Star

Amid threats of a lawsuit, a St. Louis radio station has fired former big-leaguer Jack Clark after he brazenly claimed on his talk show he knew for a fact that former Cardinals’ icon Albert Pujols was once a steroids abuser, according to reports.

Though he appeared on just seven episodes after being hired onAug. 1, at least on two occasions Clark reported one-time Pujols trainer Chris Mihlfeld had told him he “shot up” the former Cardinals slugger in 2000, the St..Louis Post Dispatch reports. The station also announced it has parted ways with Kevin Slaten, the equally bombastic co-host of Clark’s now defunct show.

Late Friday night, Pujols released a statement through his agent where he maintained his innocence: “I’ve said time and time again that I would never take, or even consider taking, anything illegal. I’ve been tested hundreds of times throughout my career and never once have I tested positive. It is irresponsible and reckless for Jack Clark to have falsely accused me of using PEDs. My faith in Jesus Christ, and my respect for the game are too important to me, I would never be able to look my wife or kids in the eye if I had done what this man is accusing me of.”

In addition, the Post Dispatch reports ESPN has received a direct email from Mihlfeld denying he ever made any such statements to Clark about providing Pujols with steroids.

“I haven’t even talked to Jack Clark in close to 10 years,” Mihlfeld told reporters. “His statements are simply not true. I have known Albert Pujols since he was 18-years-old and he never used illegal drugs in any way. I would bet my life on it and probably drop dead on the spot if I found out he was.”

Known as “Jack the Ripper” during his playing days, Clark wasn’t exactly backing down from his claims late Friday, appearing on a CBS Radio show and again stressing “I know for a fact what Chris Miflfeld told me that.”

Clark also named Detroit Tigers stat pitcher Justin Verlander and former L.A. Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green as players he’s heard similar tales about.
