The mother of jailed former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was once criminally charged in connection with an illegal gambling operation, according to the Boston Globe.
Terri Hernandez was charged in 2001 with professional gambling and several other crimes after police wiretaps allegedly caught her relaying betting lines for various NFL games and other sports. According to The Globe, the Patriots were even one of the teams she was overheard relaying lines for.
“It was a big-time operation in a little town,” said William Gerace, the attorney for Hernandez’s accomplice Martin Hovanesian. “She was a phone operator, not the brains.”
In addition, the newspaper also reports Terri Hernandez was the victim of a 2010 stabbing at the hands of her then-husband Jeffrey Cummings.
The 23-year-old former Pro Bowler remains jailed without bail and confined to solitary confinement stemming from the June 17 execution-style slaying of one-time associate and semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
Investigators have since theorized Hernandez may have been motivated by his fear Lloyd might finger his alleged role in a yet unsolved 2012 double homicide in Boston.
