Robert Griffin III Not Cleared Yet For Season Opener By Dr. James Andrews

Robert Griffin III’s return from offseason knee surgery has been hailed as nothing short of miraculous, but the Washington Redskins star quarterback has not officially been cleared to play in the team’s Sept. 9 season-opener, according to the Washington Post.

The newspaper notes Dr. James Andrews, the world-renown orthopedic surgeon who performed Griffin’s procedure, has not given him final approval on any timetable for returning to game action.

Andrews was on hand at the Redskins training facility earlier this month and observed Griffin taking part in team drills before the team’s 24-13 loss to Pittsburgh at FedEx Field on Monday. According to The Post, after the workout, Andrew again examined Griffin’s knee and discussed with him plans for the next steps in his rehabilitation.

Griffin later told reporters that the decision about his playing status for the opener might not be made until the day before the game. “It could come up to the Sunday before the game,” he said. “There’s no rush. It’s just about us all being on the same page. And I already actually talked to Andrews and we met. He says everything looks good. We’ve just got to keep going from here.”

Of Andrews witnessing his pregame workout, Griffin added: “It felt good. I wanted him to see that. He needs to be here to see me. He’s been busy saving lives, kissing babies. He’s real impressed with what’s going on.”
