Johnny Manziel Cleveland Browns Rumors: Tim Couch Worried About Elbow Problems For Johnny Football [VIDEO]

Johnny Manziel has throttled down his throwing in Browns camp because of elbow soreness, which some are calling "camp arm." Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying it is not a cause for long-term concern, but former Browns No. 1 overall pick Tim Couch says Cleveland ought to pay attention to it rather than brush the problem aside.

"For me, it was pretty bad. It was pretty severe. I missed a couple of games (in 2002) from elbow tendinitis during training camp. It was significant time off for me," Couch said.

"For me I started changing where I was delivering the ball from because I was having so many issues with the elbow. I had two shoulder surgeries (to repair a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff) after that, and it all kind of started in my elbow.''

McCown "Firm" Starter Despite Two Picks In Preseason Week 2

Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo thinks Manziel's three-quarter delivery may be to blame, but doesn't plan on altering his motion.

"You see a three-quarter release sometimes," DeFilippo told Cleveland.com. "I'm a big believer in once guys get to this level, you can help them with their lower body from the waist down. It's really, really hard to change from the waist up. It really is."

Manziel Is Still Cleveland's QB Of The Future

Couch wanted to clarify that he wasn't making a prediction about Manziel's future, but regrets trying to play through the pain.

"I'm not suggesting that's going to happen with Johnny by any means, but that's kind of what happened to me and kind of the root of what started off my shoulder issues," Couch said. "Really, the only way to heal it is to take time off and not use it, and obviously that's not going to happen for a quarterback, especially this time of year."

Manziel in particular won't want to shut himself down, since he's trying to outplay Josh McCown and be the Browns' starter in Week 1. He hasn't thrown in practice recently, but Cleveland does expect Manziel to appear in Saturday's preseason game vs. the Buccaneers, per ESPN.
