Halep overcame Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals to advance, while Pennetta triumphed over Petra Kvitová to earn her way into the semis.

--Halep and Pennetta are each looking for their first major finals appearance and may have a chance to knock off Serena Williams' bid to become the first person to notch a calendar-year Grand Slam since Steffi Graff in 1988. That is if the No. 1 ranked star gets passed her semifinals matchup with Roberta Vinci, which takes place directly after this match.
--Pennetta has the edge in head-to-head meetings. The Italian has bested the Romanian superstar in three of their four previous meetings, which includes a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory at the 2013 U.S. Open in Round 4. Halep, however, beat Pennetta in their most recent meeting on a Miami court this summer.
--Pennetta, 33, also has an edge in experience over her 23-year-old counterpart. Pennetta owns a 576-361 career record compared to Halep's 310-145 mark.
