Fantasy Football 2015 Waiver Pickup Strategy: 5 Quarterbacks To Add Following Drew Brees, Tony Romo Injuries

There are several quarterbacks that are either out, or potentially on the mend, that will make Week 3 treacherous for fantasy owners. Tony Romo (Cowboys) and Jay Cutler (Bears) are both going to miss time, while Drew Brees (Saints) and Matthew Stafford (Lions) have question marks hanging over them. Because of this, you might need to add a quarterback off the waiver wire this week.

Here are some QBs with an ownership percentage below 50 percent that will get you through this week.

Tyrod Taylor, Bills (15% Owned)

Taylor is being overlooked so you shouldn’t have a problem picking him up even with a $0 bid in FAAB leagues. He’s already proven fairly reliable for production in the running game; he’s picked up 40-plus rushing yards in each of his first two games, and he scored a rushing touchdown on Sunday.

In the passing game, Taylor looks competent. He torched New England for three touchdown passes last week. That isn’t going to be the norm, but he is comfortable in the pocket and hasn’t been rattled yet. Taylor has the Dolphins this week, so maybe this is the week Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake come alive. Miami’s defense has been dormant for two weeks though, so Taylor’s floor looks high.

Top Week 3 Waiver Wire Pickups

Andy Dalton, Bengals (31% Owned)

Dalton might be a hot pickup this week, so if you plan on grabbing him don’t go cheap on the bid. Dalton has thrown five touchdowns and zero picks through two weeks, and Cincinnati’s offense is humming with healthy wide receivers (A.J. Green, Marvin Jones), and tight end Tyler Eifert breaking out with Jermaine Gresham out of the picture. This week won’t be easy at Baltimore, but they seem to have lost their edge without OLB Terrell Suggs.

Jameis Winston, Buccaneers (24% Owned)

This pickup could vary wildly in different directions, but Winston proved in Week 2 that he’s not a lost cause based off one bad showing in his debut. The yards haven’t been there yet for Famous Jameis, but he was not picked off by the Saints, and the coaching staff is expected to take the shackles off second-year wide receiver Mike Evans this week. Winston has also recorded six rushing attempts in each of his first two games. That is probably a product of an offensive line that is out of sync and developing its chemistry, but Winston’s a great athlete who may be able to wring points out of those attempts, or perhaps even score a touchdown.

Ryan Mallett, Texans, (2% Owned)

You shouldn’t have any problems securing Mallett. While there’s ample evidence that he won’t be much of a player by NFL standards, he can produce fantasy-wise. On Sunday he threw the ball 58 times. He only amassed 244 yards, but if the Texans defense isn’t as good as advertised, and Malllett must continually throw this many passes, he and DeAndre Hopkins will have a bountiful fantasy relationship. It helps Mallett that their running game has been atrocious without Arian Foster in the mix. Foster could conceivably return this week, but that seems like an aggressive timetable. Also, the Texans are facing the Bucs this week, which is a nice cushy matchup.

Brandon Weeden, Cowboys (1% Owned)

Weeden would be a high-risk add, but we know he’ll have the job for the next six to eight weeks, and be protected by the top offensive line in football. Terrance Williams isn’t Dez Bryant, but he’s a quality receiver. TE Jason Witten remains a good chain mover, and RB Lance Dunbar has been a dynamic weapon. The Cowboys can still move the ball.
