Charcandrick West, Kansas City Chiefs: Knile Davis Is No Longer Fantasy's Best Backup [VIDEO]

The Chiefs suffered the most devastating injury possible, a torn ACL for star running back Jamaal Charles. And fantasy owners might be in worse shape thanks to this injury than the Chiefs are. Charles’ backup will be the hottest commodity on waiver wires, but the question now is who to pick up.

Knile Davis has been the answer to that question for several seasons, but Charcandrick West was the man who soaked up Charles’ work on Sunday. West ran for 31 yards on seven carries, and made one catch on two targets in the passing game. Davis was a non-factor, receiving just two carries and picking up two yards.

Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups

It’s unclear what a full week of practice without Charles will mean for the distribution of work moving forward. Davis is the more proven back, but that might not actually work to his benefit. He’s averaged only 3.4 yards per carry in his career, and never averaged 30 yards per game. Davis has shown a nose for the end zone, however, rushing for six touchdowns in 2014.

West, an undrafted free agent out of Abilene Christian, has virtually no NFL resume. He was effective on Sunday, averaging 4.4 yards per rush. Last week he was targeted three times in the passing game, which will be important. If West is the superior pass-catcher, he will get the majority of the work because of how much the Chiefs relied on Charles on the ground and through the air.

Will The Lions Look At Tim Tebow?

Fantasy owners, particularly Charles owners, should set their sights on West first. It will be tough to land West without a very high waiver priority though, while Davis shouldn’t be tough to add. Davis will have value, particularly as a goal line back. Expect him to be a touchdown-dependent option only fit for FLEX use.
