Daniel Murphy Mets Rumors: Murph Dog's Postseason Stacks Up With Carlos Beltran's Incredible 2004 Run [VIDEO]

Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy is the biggest winner of the MLB playoffs so far, going on one of the greatest runs in playoffs history. Murphy has homered in five straight playoff games, and already taken the franchise lead for October home runs from Mike Piazza. So is Murphy having the greatest postseason of all-time?

Another ex-Met, Carlos Beltran, would beg to differ. He had a memorable postseason tear with the Astros in 2004 that ended in the NLCS because it's hard for a single man to defeat an entire baseball club. The Astros fell to the Cardinals, ending Beltran's opportunities. Still, it's regarded as the most dominant stretch of postseason play the sport has seen. Let's compare.

Matt Harvey's Agent Takes Out Huge Insurance Policy On Ace's Arm

PLAYER G PA R 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG
Beltran 12 56 21 3 0 8 14 6 .435 .536 1.022
Murphy 8 34 9 1 0 6 9 1 .364 .382 .989

The chart throws a bit of cold water on Murphy's case, since he doesn't have the edge in a single category. Beltran had 12 games to Murphy's eight, and the list of names Murphy has victimized for his six home runs is eye-popping. Check out the names and regular season numbers for the pitchers Murphy has taken deep.

3 Big-Budget Teams Should Be In On Daniel Murphy This Offseason

PITCHER W L ERA WHIP K
Clayton Kershaw 16 7 2.13 0.88 301
Zack Greinke 19 3 1.66 0.84 200
Jon Lester 11 12 3.34 1.12 207
Jake Arrieta 22 6 1.77 0.86 236
Kyle Hendricks 8 7 3.95 1.16 167

Alright, so Hendricks isn't great. But the other four had a combined record of 68-28, and struck out 944 batters. And Murphy is beating them like eggs in the morning.

Beltran's run gets the nod for now, but Murphy's still going. The Mets are up 3-0 on the Cubs, and in the entire history of baseball just one team has ever come back from such a daunting hole, the 2004 Red Sox. So while Murphy's incredible numbers are slightly less incredible than Beltran's so far, he is going to keep getting opportunities to tack on.

Don't miss Mets games folks, because history is happening.
