Boxing News 2015: Bob Arum Wary Of Manny Pacquiao-Canelo Alvarez Fight

Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez is scheduled to face WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotton this November 21 at the Mandalay Events Hotel in Las Vegas but it seems that his next fight has become intriguing.

The Mexican made it clear that in the event he does defeat Cotto and wrest the WBC crown, he will only consider facing Gennady Golovkin if a catch weight is in play.

Of course, such didn’t sit well with Triple G saying he is not amenable to a catch weight clause. However, the demands of Alvarez will be futile if the WBC overrules it. So will he end up vacating the title (just in case) instead?

Now other than that, it seems that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has had talks with Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar Dela Hoya about a possible fight between Manny Pacquiao and Alvarez but it seems he is not recommending it.

It seems that Arum sees a lot of loopholes in setting the match, placing Pacquiao at a disadvantage.

Among them include the size disparity. Pacquiao is 5-foot-6 ½ while Alvarez is 5-foot-9. Though Pacquiao has fought larger fighters before, the age factor comes into mind. At 36, the matchup is a bit risky with youth also on the side of the taller Mexican.

Like in the case of Golovkin, Alvarez is expected to seek a catch weight clause as well but the thing is that he won’t go down to Pacquiao’s weight. Alvarez seems to be comfortable at 155 lbs. though there is a possibility he would want to go higher to get an advantage.

As it is, Arum considers that catch weight angle a bit tricky.

A potential matchup between the two could be something more interesting compared to the other names currently being mentioned. But a big fight like that may be hard to fix at this juncture.

Hence and should a tiff with Alvarez be too complicated to fix, Arum may as well stick to the original names he had mentioned – Amir Khan, Terence Crawford and possibly Timothy Bradley Jr.

Pacquiao’s official opponent will be named either in November or December with the fight set to take place likely in April, 2016.
