Boxing News 2015: Oscar De La Hoya and Jay-Z Make Friendly $100K Bet

The mega fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez is fast approaching with both seemingly standing even on all aspects.

The fight is a pretty tough one to call with both fighters carrying their share of advantages. Cotto is bringing in lots of ring smarts and experience while Alvarez is young and hungry. So in the end, it could boil down to which fighter is able to outwit the other.

While that is up in the air, the boxing promoters have dipped their hands a bit by making a friendly $100,000 wager on the fight.

Oscar De La Hoya is promoting Alvarez via the Golden Boy Promotions banner while Jay-Z is the one backing Cotto. The $100,000 pot will however not go to the winner’s pocket but rather to charity which will be chosen by the winner.

Not a bad side bet for a good cause.

If betting odds are to be a basis, Cotto is the underdog in this showdown with Alvarez. Apparently a lot hinges on the explosive brawling style of Alvarez who is expected to take it to Cotto.

But then again, Cotto is expecting that and the Puerto Rican is expected to use his experience to try and waylay the Mexican fighter.

The fight is essentially more important to Alvarez and De La Hoya, a win of which could help boost the Mexican on higher ground and possibly face big name fighters moving forward.

Cotto and Alvarez mix it up on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with the WBC middleweight title on the line.
