New York Jets Rumors: How The Steelers Can Screw Gang Green Out Of The Playoffs Even If They Win 11 Games [VIDEO]

Entering Week 14 the AFC’s playoff picture is totally in flux, with the Wild Card race being the most crowded. Here are the seeds as of today:

1. Bengals
2. Broncos
3. Patriots
4. Colts
5. Chiefs
6. Jets

No. 6 is where things get trickiest. Although the Jets are the No. 6 seed right now, they do not control their own destiny. In a wild twist, an 11-5 team in the AFC could potentially miss the postseason boat, while the maximum wins for the NFC East division winner is nine.

In this highly unlikely scenario, if the Jets and Steelers both win out, Pittsburgh would jump ahead of Gang Green based on the third level of Wild Card tie breakers. The first tie-breaker is their head-to-head record, which does not exist this year. The second is their conference record; if both teams win out, they’d each finish 8-4 within the AFC. Next comes their record against common opponents, of which there must be a minimum of four.

In 2015 the Jets and Steelers have four common opponents (five games). They are the Browns, Colts, Patriots, and Raiders. Both teams have beaten the Browns and Colts, and both teams have lost to the Patriots. Pittsburgh defeated the Raiders, while the Jets lost. Pittsburgh has one remaining game with the Browns, while the Jets have one more go-round vs. the Patriots.

The Jets remaining schedule is more conducive to them running the table than Pittsburgh’s. The Jets remaining games are as follows: vs. Titans, @ Cowboys, vs. Patriots, @Bills. Those four opponents have a combined record of 23-25. The Steelers remaining schedule reads: @ Bengals, vs. Broncos, @ Ravens, @ Browns.

That’s three road games within the division to close the season, plus a home date vs. the No. 2 seed in the conference. It’s a much rougher slate to run the table against than the Jets, whose toughest opponent, the Patriots, is riddled with injuries and will likely have the division clinched when they square off.
