The NBA trade deadline is two months away, which is ample enough time to talk about Jeremy Lin's possible return to the Knicks.
The first domino has already fallen. New York has expressed interest in obtaining a young scoring guard or shooter to improve the backcourt, per ESPN. There's only so much Jose Calderon you can subject yourself to before you reevaluate your life.

The second domino revolves around the Knicks' desire to target small. The front office doesn't plan to make a move that would have an impact on their future cap flexibility.
Lin's contract follows those guidelines.

The 27-year-old signed a two-year, $4.37 million contract with the Hornets in the offseason. He will also be an unrestricted free agent in 2017, making any trade for Lin in 2016 an 18-month investment.

Obviously, Lin's age isn't characterized as "young" these days, but his 16.18 player effeciency rating is more than an upgrade over Calderon's 12.74, per ESPN.
Admittedly, prognosticating any return for Lin to Madison Square Garden is far fetched in mid-December -- especially with the Hornets at 15-10 -- but a need is a need.
You consider any player who can fill that need eight weeks in advance.
