At 9:00 p.m. tonight the Detroit Red Wings (5-2-0, 10 points) will enter the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado to try and hand the Avalanche (6-0-0, 12 points) their first loss of the 2013-2014 season. Live stream the game here; Red Wings fans can listen to the game on 97.1 The Ticket, while Avalanche fans may do the same on 104.3 The Fan.
The Avalanche are red-hot under Colorado legend Patrick Roy's guidance, averaging 3.5 goals a night while surrendering just one.
"I don't know what to say. And that doesn't happen to me very often," said Roy, who is shooting for the best start ever to a coaching career. "I certainly appreciate more the way our guys played than appreciate breaking a record or something like this. I'm not really excited about that record, to be honest with you. I'm excited about looking at the way the team has been playing, how hard the team has been working."
The key to Colorado's blazing beginning has been goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who is thriving under Roy, one of the top goalies in NHL history. "I guess goaltending is crucial in this league," Roy said, wryly. "You need some good goaltending every night, that's what we've been lucky with. ... That's a game where Varly -- that was a steal from him."
The Red Wings have been playing well themselves, unleashing an average of 35 shots a night. "I think we've done a lot of good things. ... We've just got to keep getting better as a team," coach Mike Babcock said. "I like what's going on."
Still, he knows this Colorado team will be a tall order tonight.
"They look like they go very fast. ... They got a bunch of injuries last year, and this year they got more guys again and keep adding good players and (MacKinnon) looks like he's going to be a star very quickly, so they've got a good-looking team," Babcock said.
