UFC News and Notes: Conor McGregor Wants to Face Robbie Lawler, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Ultimate Fighting Championship superstar Conor McGregor is open to facing Robbie Lawler for the welterweight title, and is also interested in colliding with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match.

McGregor will go up against Nate Diaz at UFC 196 on Saturday. The 27-year-old superstar was supposed to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title, but the reigning champion sustained a broken foot.

With dos Anjos out of the picture at this point, McGregor said that facing Lawler is "the leading option" for him. The Irish superstar said he respects Lawler, but he is confident that he has all the tools to beat the reigning UFC welterweight champion. He also thinks that the disparity in weight will not be a big factor if they collide.

"I like Robbie," McGregor said via MMA Fighting. "I won't say a bad word about Robbie. He fights with his heart. He's been around the game so, so long. But if we fought, I would beat Robbie. I'm too fast for him. The size difference is not anything. I've stood beside him. I've seen him."

Meanwhile, McGregor also revealed that he is still open to facing Mayweather in a boxing match. He said that he would love to face the unbeaten boxing icon, knowing that fans want to see the showdown.

"I'm open to discussion, come at me," McGregor told the Telegraph when asked about facing Mayweather. "But I hold the key. It is me that holds the key to that fight. I'm open-minded, I love competition and I love fighting. It would be interesting to see if we could make that fight happen if the fans wanted to see it."

But before thinking of Lawler and Mayweather, McGregor has to win against Diaz on Saturday. The boxing match against Mayweather is also questionable. The former boxing pound-for-pound king, who announced his retirement in September last year, has reiterated in previous interviews that he will not fight again.
