Boxing News 2016: Amir Khan Won't Get Shot at Manny Pacquiao Because Canelo Alvarez Will Knock Him Out, Says Bob Arum

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is quite sure that British boxer Amir Khan will not get a shot at Manny Pacquiao after he decided to face World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Arum said in an interview with The Telegraph that they considered Khan for Pacquiao's next fight. But now that Khan is set to face Alvarez, the veteran promoter is quite sure that Khan will not be lined up with superstars like Pacquiao because he thinks the Briton has no chance against Canelo.

"If you're being realistic, Khan doesn't have much of a chance with Alvarez," Arum said. "If he gets knocked out, which I think might happen, there would be no way he would be a future opponent on a pay-per-view fight against Manny Pacquiao or any other elite fighter."

The 84-year-old promoter added that if he was handling Khan, he will not agree on the fight against Canelo because it is a huge risk at this point of his career. Arum thinks the decision is a "bridge too far" and that Khan should have picked the proposed showdown with International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kell Brook.

"He would have made a lot of money on the Kell Brook fight and it's a much more winnable fight," Arum added. "I always thought that's what he should have done. It would have been a sensational fight and it would have done marvelously on pay per view."

On the other hand, Arum also revealed that they reached out to Khan's camp about a potential fight with Pacquiao. However, the negotiation collapsed because Khan and his camp were reportedly asking for too much money.

"The Khan people presented their views on what Khan should be paid and what he was worth," Arum said. "But when we looked at the numbers we didn't think that was attractive as far as us making a profit on the promotion."

Khan, who holds a 31-3 record with 19 knockout victories, has been chasing big-money fights against Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather before Alvarez picked him for his first title defense on May 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
