The ongoing probe of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has shifted to his alleged involvement in an interstate gun-trafficking ring, according to CNN.
The revelation comes a day after Massachusetts State Police served one of Hernandez's former college teammates and roommates, Mike Pouncey, with a subpoena related to the investigation. Federal agents were stationed outside the Miami Dolphins locker room following their 27-17 loss to Patriots on Sunday, where they served an unsuspecting Pouncey with aforementioned court documents.
According to CNN, the gun trafficking investigation deals with illegally transporting weapons across state lines and, in part, involves the discovery of an assault-style rifle hidden in a vehicle rented in Florida and later found in Massachusetts, according to a separate law enforcement source.
Hernandez, 23, was charged last August in the execution-style slaying of semi-pro football player and one-time associate Odin Lloyd. Police have since speculated Lloyd may have been killed because he had information about other violent crimes Hernandez is alleged to have been involved in.
He is also the subject of another grand jury probe investigating the 2012 drive-by slaying of two men in downtown Boston. Police later discovered the vehicle thought to used in the crime stored in the garage of a home rented in the name of Hernandez's uncle.
