Bill Belichick is accused of being boring during his press conferences. Maybe we're just judging him by the wrong events in which he participates.
Belichick appeared dressed as a pirate on the Instagram account of his girlfriend, Linda Holliday. The photo is an amazing departure from the NFL persona that Belichick has tried to create as head coach of the New England Patriots.
Perhaps the most surprising part about the photo is that it came during the middle of the NFL season. The Patriots are 6-2 and looking to position itself for another long postseason run. Belichick isn't the type of coach who the average fans think have a life outside of football.
According to NFL.com, the occasion was a team function in the form of a Halloween soiree on Monday night.
Of course, the costume wasn't the first out-of-character incident for Belichick in his relationship with Holliday, a television host in Boston.
In March, USA TODAY Sports reported that Holliday announced she would conduct a question-and-answer session with Belichick through her Twitter account. He answered questions about his favorite coaching memory (Teddy Bruschi dumping water on Belichick and his father), his favorite candy (junior mints) and his favorite Bon Jovi song ("Bounce").
NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal also said that Belichick recycled the costume from a 2009 Halloween event. Fansided.com noted that Belichick also seemed to be enjoying himself, which would constitute another departure from his in-season persona.
It remains to be seen whether Belichick will burn the costume if the Patriots lose at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
