Juan Manuel Marquez Next Fight: ‘Dinamita’ Talks About Potential Bout With Miguel Cotto, Mexico-Puerto Rico Rivalry

Juan Manuel Marquez is still determined to make a return to the ring and is still open to facing fellow former world champion Miguel Cotto in another Mexico-Puerto Rico boxing match.

Marquez, who owns a 56-7-1 record with 40 knockout victories, will turn 43 this year, but the Mexican boxing warrior is not yet ready to retire, revealing that he is eyeing a comeback fight either in July or August.

"I start training," Marquez said via BoxingScene. "I would like to fight in July or August maybe in Mexico City. Right now my knee feels good but when I start training every day we will see."

Marquez has been sidelined by a knee injury since scoring a unanimous decision victory against Mike Alvarado in May 2014. The four-division world champion had several comeback attempts before but failed to recover. Over the past several weeks, Marquez has been linked to a possible fight with Cotto.

When asked about the proposed showdown with Cotto, Marquez sounded very open to the idea, knowing that it will be an additional chapter to the boxing rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico.

"Cotto wants to fight with me," Marquez continued. "We will see. It is a great fight for me. I start training right now. I want to have a preparation fight first then see how I feel. It is an incredible rivalry."

Cotto, who has a 40-5 record with 33 knockouts, is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Saul Alvarez in their World Boxing Council middleweight title fight in November last year.

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican is reportedly planning to return to the welterweight division, which will likely make the bout against Marquez possible because the latter insisted that he will only face Cotto at 147 pounds.

"Cotto wants to fight with me at 147. If Cotto gives the fight at 147 and I feel good, let's do the fight," Marquez said.
