Today at 4:05 p.m. ET, the Carolina Panthers (5-3) and San Francisco 49ers (6-2) go head-to-head in Week 10 action live from Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The game can be live streamed here. The Panthers and 49ers come into this game hot with four-game and five-game winning streaks respectively, making for a pretty good storyline heading into Week 10.
After a rocky start, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has turned his season, and the team's season, around in the last four games. Overall, Newton is 154-for-239 (64.4%) for 1,801 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season. Head coach Ron Rivera, whose seat may be cooling off now that the third-year quarterback has turned the team around, believes his Panthers can be playoff bound.
"I think we can be a playoff team because of the things we've done and because of the way we're playing," Rivera said via ESPN. "If we had played like this, consistent all the way through, who knows? We have a great opportunity and a challenge in front of us. The chances can be limitless. But we have to play that way. Just because we're doing it now doesn't mean it is automatic."
Carolina enters today a game behind the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South and is looking for its first five-game win streak since the team rattled off six in a row back in 2005. Carolina has taken advantage of bad opponents during the last four games, but will face a harsher test in San Francisco.
The 49ers come off their bye week after outscoring their opponents 174-61 in their last five games, and hope to ride some momentum into this Week 10 matchup. Coach Jim Harbaugh noted his team has improved over the course of the season.
"Really a dramatic improvement in terms of playing disciplined, sound technique football," Harbaugh told ESPN. "So, it's a great job by the fellas in that regard. Execution's been good, getting better and you keep seeing that we can, that there's even, you play good football and there's room for improvement."
San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick enters play Sunday after going 113-for-198 (57.1%) for 1,584 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions thus far this season. He also has three rushing touchdowns on 49 carries for 294 yards.
Frank Gore has ranked second in the NFL since Week 3 in rushing yards, but will be going up against the league's second-best run coverage in the Panthers. Gore has rushed for 618 yards on 147 carries and has seven scores thus far.
The 49ers rank last in the league in passing yards, and Kaepernick is hoping that the return of Mario Manningham--who was second on the team with 42 receptions for 449 yards--will boost their yardage.
Both teams will look to increase their winning streaks, but only one will when the Panthers and 49ers square off live from Candlestick Park this afternoon.
