Nokia Lumia 1020 Can Be Used As A Microscope Now

Nokia 1020 which was launched back in the year 2013 with a 41 MP sensor and downscaling algorithms is the reason it is considered as the best smartphone cameras amongst all. With the technology reaching to every home Nokia 1020 comes up with one more innovation of converting the phone as a microscope.

Users all know how critical it is to identify mutations in DNA sequences to fight the disease about which you might not be aware of. In this matter, we always had to go to the laboratories and pay hundreds and thousands of dollars.

A team of few researchers based at the University of California, Sweden Stockholm University and Uppsala University have designed a camera for a smartphone which can be used as a low-cost DNA analyser as reported in Dpreview.

To use this, one just needs to place tissue samples in a small container in which Lumia and optical attachment are used which record the multi-color fluorescence and bright-field images. Then the captured image is fed to an algorithm where the analysis takes place and tries to find any possible mutations.

Mat Nilson who is a Professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Stockholm and Uppsala Universities said in an interview about the importance of testing done at local centers. "Oftentimes, advanced lab-based testing is performed at major hospitals, which is limiting, as not everyone has access to a hospital that can perform these tests," Nilson said as reported in Digital Trends.

Aydogan Ozcan who is also a Professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at UCLA told, about how these devices can be well under $500 if manufacture as a bulk which is way cheaper than those microscopes available in the market used for DNA sequencing ranging $10,000 to $50,000.

In recent times, the production of Lumia 1020 has been stopped for some time and this new optical attachment will be provided in the recent productions.
