One of the biggest stars in UFC history, Georges St-Pierre has reportedly agreed to terms on a new contract with the UFC, which is a welcome development considering the recent void in star power of the promotion’s first events of the year. There have been a number of names thrown into consideration for the former long-time welterweight champion’s comeback fight, one of whom is current middleweight champion Michael Bisping.
As reported by MMA Fighting, oddsmakers at Bovada set the line on who Georges St-Pierre should fight in his UFC return. Michael Bisping, who last defended his title against Dan Henderson, opened as the early betting favorite at +130. Last year, negotiations reportedly were in place for a potential Georges St-Pierre – Michael Bisping super fight. Other names in the Bovada list include Anderson Silva, Stephen Thompson, Tyron Woodley, Robbie Lawler and Nick Diaz.
According noted by MMA Junkie, while no timetable has been set for Georges St-Pierre’s return, early projections place the French Canadian’s first fight in the Octagon since 2013 to happen in the third quarter of 2017. Widely considered as the greatest welterweight in UFC history, Georges St-Pierre has not fought since winning a controversial split decision against Johny Hendricks in 2013. Michael Bisping, for his part, has been recovering from a procedure to repair a torn meniscus, along with other knee issues, last winter.
On Monday, Michael Bisping said that the odds favored Yoel Romero to be his next fight. He followed that up, however, with the possibility of fighting the former welterweight champion. “I’ve had no dialogue with the UFC, but I know that Georges (St-Pierre) and his trainer told me recently that they’re pretty much at an agreement with the UFC, so the deal is almost done and he wants to fight me,” Bisping said during an appearance at the “MMA Hour.”
