Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto Likely to Collide in a Thrilling Year-ender

Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico and Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico becoming the latest participants in a fight allied to the well-known rivalry for boxing supremacy between the two Latin American nations is highly possible according to a report recently floated online. The rivalry probably reached its peak in a fight - dubbed as the battle of the little giants - involving the legendary Puerto Rican Wilfredo Gomez and the great Mexican Salvador Sanchez in 1981.  But the fan interest in any high-profile boxing match involving citizens of the two countries is far from being dead, which is why if and when the Marquez-Cotto tussle eventually materializes it will still going to sell, albeit no longer as lucrative had they met many years ago when they were still in their athletic prime.

Then again, setting the rivalry angle aside, the dissimilarity in skills and physical strengths separating Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto present a strong element of unpredictability in so far as the outcome of the fight goes. While Marquez is arguably one of the finest, if not really the finest, in the area of counterpunching, Cotto is an outstanding aggressor and protects himself very well while launching attacks and throwing bombs of his own. The extremely slippery Mayweather had some struggles overcoming Cotto in a fight that left Mayweather's face bloodied.

Discussions about staging the fight in 2016 were already in progress but a disagreement on the weight issue went unresolved.  Juan Manuel Marquez who had a lengthy stay in the featherweight division prior to him moving up and settling in the welterweight class, demanded to face Cotto at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs but Miguel Cotto won't budge. He was unwilling to go south in weight under 150 lbs.

But a boxing match, leave alone a main fight on pay-per -view, is also a huge business opportunity. The four -weight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto, himself a four-division

world champion, know it pretty well of course.  This could certainly be the strongest reason why each party is once more willing to sit across the negotiating table and this time around they might finally resolved issues. Then finally proceed with the fight at the end of the year after the two combatants fought respective interim fights in June.
