Boxing News: Gennady Golovkin Fighting in June Will Delay Showdown With Canelo Alvarez, Says Oscar De La Hoya

Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez is one of the few money fights left in boxing and it could be delayed once again. According to Oscar De La Hoya, the fight is going to be derailed if Golovkin fights this coming June.

In an interview with ESPN, De La Hoya revealed his concern about the possibility of Gennady Golovkin fighting Billy Joe Saunders on June in Kazakhstan. "The Golden Boy" noted that "GGG" taking an interim fight will delay his showdown with Canelo this coming September.

"A June Golovkin fight would be a disrespect to everybody. How serious do they want to make this fight happen? He could get cut, he could get dropped, he could get beat. You can hurt a hand," De La Hoya said.

The Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO noted that taking a fight in June is too close to September. He is worried that the fight won't get promoted as much as he wants. He also mentioned that sponsors are already lined up to begin promotion after Canelo's fight on May 6.

Saul Alvarez will face fellow Mexican star Julio Cesar Chaver Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Oscar De La Hoya is also hoping that his top fighter will come out victorious against the son of Mexico's greatest fighter.

Gennady Golovkin, on the other hand, is coming off a unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs last Saturday to retain his WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles. It was a very close fight and many felt that Jacobs should have won the match. For the first time in nine years, Golovkin did not win via knockout.

According to The Telegraph, Gennady Golovkin is very interested in unifying all the middleweight titles in his home country of Kazakhstan in June. He is looking to fight WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, who is confident that he can beat "GGG" based on what he saw in the Jacobs fight.
