The Los Angeles Lakers may be in the midst of their fourth straight losing season, but it appears some semblance of stability is finally upon the marquee franchise, as the power struggle between the Buss siblings looks to finally be over as the three Buss siblings, Jeanie, Janie and Johnny have agreed for Jeanie to serve as controlling owner as long as the family owns the Lakers. The three filed papers in the Los Angeles Country Superior Court Monday, asking a judge to enact the order.
As noted by Bleacher Report, the move also allows Jeanie Buss to retain her seat on the board of directors. Previously, Jim and Johnny attempted to call a shareholders meeting that was designed to remove Jeanie from her role as the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. A Los Angeles Times report, citing a person familiar with the situation, said that development also includes Jim Buss’ resignation as co-trustee, which was part of Jeannie’s requirement to resolve the dispute.
“Now with the Lakers having the ability to focus on the basketball court and not on the legal court, I think all Laker fans can breathe a sigh of relief,” Jeannie Buss’ attorney Adam Streisand told the Los Angeles Times. According to the report, Jim Buss didn’t return phone and text messages seeking comment. Jim was earlier relieved by Jeannie of his role as executive vice president of basketball operations of the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Despite the fact that I gave my brother Jim ample time to prove himself in his role… I could not allow the damage being done to the franchise of the past few years to continue,” Jeannie Buss reportedly said in court documents. The Los Angeles Lakers (21-52) last made the playoffs in 2012-13, marking the longest stretch the franchise has missed the postseason since moving to Los Angeles.
