World Cup 2018: Biggest Games To Watch In The Group Stages

The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia has already provided football fans with historic victories and bizarre finishes in just a matter of two days.

Among those games include Morocco's own goal loss to Iran, Russia's 5-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia, and Cristiano Ronaldo's historic World Cup hat-trick. With more than three weeks left in the competition, Sports World News will look at some of the biggest match-ups in the group stages.

Argentina Vs. Iceland

Iceland going up against Argentina is a clear depiction of David versus Goliath. Iceland who will be entering its first World Cup is the smallest team to ever qualify in the quadrennial tournament. However, the Krasnodar-based team has proven its worth in the football world after beating England in the 2016 European Championship.

On the other hand, Argentina will hope to win the World Cup in what could be Lionel Messi's final appearance in the tournament, pitting the best players in the world. Argentina which is gunning for its first title since 1986 is projected to win according to experts. The game is set this Saturday at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.

France Vs. Peru

Peru will make its return to the World Cup for the first time since 1982. Prior to making the World Cup, Peru has shown some flashes of brilliance as they settled a 0-0 draw against Argentina.

Meanwhile, the Frenchmen will rely on the heroics of Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane, and Hugo Lloris to end its world cup title-drought. France last won the World Cup in 1998. The France-Peru match is slated for June 21 at 8 a.m. ET.

Uruguay Vs. Russia

Following a 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, the Russians will need just a single game to advance into the next round. However, Uruguay is no pushover as it has fared well over host teams in both the 2011 Copa America in Argentina and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The match between Uruguay and Russia will kickstart on June 25 at 10 a.m. ET

Nigeria Vs. Argentina

Nigeria will be heading into this match with sky-high confidence after beating the Argentinians 4-2 in a friendly match last May. Nigeria has been on a roll lately behind the leadership of Gernot Rohr who took over the team two years ago.

Additionally, the Argentinians haven't been that fortunate as it lost three finals in a span of two years. The game between Nigeria and Argentina is scheduled for June 26 at 2 p.m. ET.
