Veteran golfer Tiger Woods kissed his US Open championship hopes goodbye after being eliminated on Friday at the Shinnecock Hills.
The 42-year-old Woods couldn't help but be frustrated with his lackluster performance in the competition. He finished the tournament with two consecutive birdies to settle for a total of 10-over.
"I'm not very happy the way I played and the way I putted. I'm 10-over par so I don't know that you can be too happy and too excited about 10-over par," a frustrated Woods said.
Poor Start For Woods
Woods was off to a terrible start as he shot a triple-bogey on the initial hole before firing back-to-back doubles on the back nine to finish 8-over-78 in the opening round. The 14-time major champion settled for the 101st spot out of 156 competitors at the end of the first day.
Friday started very well for Woods as he immediately scored a birdie on his first hole. He bounced back from a bogey finished in the 14th hole with another birdie at the 16th to keep his chances alive.
However, Woods failed to sustain his momentum in the next holes as he made a double-bogey at the par-4 1st to drop to plus-10. He converted two bogeys on his next five holes before sinking a 17-foot putt on his last stroke to settle for a 72. Woods was 14 strokes behind tournament leader Dustin Johnson who both competed in Hole 67.
It also marked Woods' second missed cut this year of 10 events. In his storied US Open career, Woods was only cut in 2006 and 2015.
Drought Continues For Woods
Woods hasn't won a major title since 2008 when he bagged the US Open. The 2008 US Open etched Woods' name in sports lore as he equalized Rocco Mediate with an incredible putt on the 18th green. He outperformed Mediate in an 18-hole playoff which lasted for 19 holes thereafter.
The 80th-ranked Woods was then playing against Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott in the opening round of the 2008 US Open. During this year's edition, he went up against Johnson who is ranked number one in the world and second-seed Justin Thomas.
In addition, Woods has yet to crack a non-Masters major competition since the 2014 US Open Championship. Furthermore, he has also failed to make the cut of US Open since 2013.
Besides that, Woods was also unable to finish within the top five of a major tournament since 2013. His last top-five finish in the U.S. Open came in 2010.
