Wrigley Field Scoreboard Pin Fell On Chicago Cubs Fan: Good Thing He Had A Bucket On His Head

A Chicago Cubs fan saved himself from serious injury on Tuesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, thanks to a plastic bucket.

The 19-year-old baseball fan was wearing the bucket on his head when a footlong metal tile fell off from Wrigley Field's manually operated center-field scoreboard. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said that the injury could have been worse if the fan did not wear the plastic bucket.

Green revealed that nothing like this has occurred before with the scoreboard, saying that the team officials are still finding the cause of the incident. The fan was immediately brought to the Illinois Masonic Medical Center to be treated. The fan required five staples to a close cut to his head.

The Wrigley Field is the second oldest park in the country after Boston's iconic Fenway Park, which is also the only other major-league stadium that uses a hand-turned scoreboard. The scoreboard itself is 81 years old.

People from Chicago take great pride in their iconic scoreboard whose numbered tiles are manually switched out by workers inside the structure to display the scores of matches around the MLB. The Wrigley scoreboard has been left untouched due to a recent renovation project.

Great July For The Cubs

The Cubs held a 14-7 win-loss card in July. Chicago opened the month with an 11-10 victory over the Minnesota Twins before registering two consecutive victories over the Detroit Tigers.

The Cubs continued their early success by winning two of their three games against the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds outsmarted the Cubs 3-2 in their first encounter before Chicago returned the favor by beating Cincinnati 8-7, and 6-5 respectively.

However, the Cubs encountered a major roadblock when it lost two of their matches against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants eked out a 2-1 win over the Cubs in their first match before clinching a 5-4 triumph on their last match.

Chicago recovered in style as they recorded four straight wins highlighted by three victories over the San Diego Padres. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cubs won two games each in their four encounters this month.

After pulling off a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday, the Cubs failed to sustain its momentum as it dropped their first two games against the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks blasted the Cubs 7-1 on Monday before scoring a 5-1 triumph on Tuesday. The Cubs managed to put an end to their losing streak by scoring a 2-1 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday before scoring a 7-6 escape victory on Thursday.
